The removable seat pad on the left side of the bench is upholstered in an ivory fabric.
Maybe it was for a public venue. Second photo shows some missing veneer on the back of the bench. Now you have a place to stuff extra dining room essentials or the kids' tiny hats and sunglasses that. It is not only functional (working either as a bench seat, display piece or low coffee table), but is considered by some to be one of the 20th century's most.
